First you may have to find it, though. When I took my chipped bird in to
the vet recently, they scanned the chip but didn't bother to look up the
information - which would have told them that the bird belongs to someone
else. I had thought that a chip would help recover a stolen bird, but I
now doubt that very much - at least in my area.
If you find a bird that you think is yours, scanning the chip will find
out for sure, but of someone wishes to keep the bird, or sell it to
someone who doesn't care if it was stolen, I don't think the chip will
help much. Maybe they do things different in your area?
My guess is that they (veterinarians) don't want to deter people with
stolen birds from bringing the bird in for medical care. It's a policy
that makes sense, but the side-effect is that even if someone brings your
bird to a vet with a scanner, you're no closer to having the bird
returned. Again, at least in my area.
