Re: [Freeflight] teflon poisoning, important
Don't panic! Teflon poisoning is real, but rare, and usually associated with pretty high temperatures, higher than regular cooking temps. Signs of illness (weakness, uncoordinated, wheezing, respiratory distress, seizures) come on very rapidly, and the bird is usually dead before s/he can be treated.
Lots of people still use non-stick cookware with birds in the house while they slowly replace it. It's probably good to have birds out of the kitchen and use the fan ventilator if you're doing this.
Don't beat yourself or your roomate up. :)

Subject: [Freeflight] teflon poisoning, important
I posted this to the lory list first but noone has responded and I know
Freefilght people are usually on, If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
My roomate just cooked a steak with a teflon pan with Jackie (yellow streak
lory) in the kitchen. I was telling her on our way home that I was going to
throw all the teflon out because I had been meaning to do it since I got jackie 2
years ago, but I hadn't. I didn't want anyone accidently using it. I ran into
the kitchen when I realised she was using a teflon pan, started blessing her
out, and quickly took Jackie's cage outside. So now he is outside and it's
going to get down pretty low tonite so I can't leave him outside. What signs if
any do I need to keep an eye out for with him? Is there anything a vet can do
if he does start to show signs of illness? How long do I need to air the house
out? Do i need to take him to my mom's for the night? If he drops dead am I
intitled to beat my roomate to a pulp? (j/k on the last one, but if he dies I
am going to be one mad person.)
Thanks for any help you can give!!
