Would you prefer to fly in an open area or one with cover? Or does
that depend on which raptors are local to the area?

I prefer to stay in the open, which is easy living here in the desert.
Either way, I watch and listen to the parrot, and am prepared to go into
immediate shutdown at any moment.
BTW, this is also the course of action for my falconry birds. It's not
uncommon here to send off your falcon for some leisurely lure flying only to see
him suddenly trying to stay alive and keep away form a hungry wild Golden Eagle
that came out of no where.
We as trainers have to accept that we are putting our trainees into
potential danger, and we have to have contingency plans in case something happens, a
hungry bird of prey appearing being one of those things.
When I walk a tiger, I know I am in danger, so I take extra steps and effort
to minimize it.
