It seems like "we" still struggle with trying to come
to grips with is outdoor freeflight safe. Clearly
there are dangers. Is it more or less safe than
indoors? I don't know -no, yes, maybe. But, there
are dangers -if you ask me, regardless of how well the
bird responds to cues, whether it flies in a straight
line, or to the next county and back. There are
dangers with letting your dog run loose, or letting
your kids play in the yard. Sometimes I wonder what
the hell am I thinking letting a bird fly around lose
outside -what a crazy notion, who would do such a
thing!? But then I run down a mental laundry list of
all the indoor birds I've known that have had a toe
bitten off when they landed on another bird's cage,
drowned in the sink, were stepped on by cousin Eddie,
flew into a window and were killed........ I don't
know which is more dangerous. Keeping birds indoors
certainly limits the dangers to indoors, for what its
worth (and what is it worth?)
