Re: [Freeflight] Set bird up for success
You got it, Bette. that is what i think: that there is are so many
aspects involved in getting a bird ready to FF, and every aspect is
as important.
Food control is not any more or less important than: desensitizing
to environment; asking for new behavior that is manageable to the
bird, also called approximations by Barb (Joe doesn't have a formal
name for it I don't think, but that is definitely discussed when I
was in his class); how to read bird to understand if it is a good
time or not for lesson - not responding at this time? what to change
to help improve response (or called ' how to set the bird up for
success') - try again later (when it's hungrier?), too big a request
from you? is it all over you (too hungry?) change in its general
behavior (ill, depressed, weak from too much weight loss?), not
enough time in new environment (desensitization)? new hairdo? using
pinenuts that my Boss used to LOVE but one day decided they are
SCARY, so need to try different treat (this one took me a whole day
to figure out!)? What's its agility: can it fly around tight
corners? fly vertically up and down? will he fly to you even if he
can't see you? Can he 'think on wing'?: need more 'obstacles' for
him to solve.
Believe me, if any of these things are awry, you will not have a
responding bird. If you don't have a responding bird, you can't
train. It is so important to SET THE BIRD UP FOR SUCCESS by
adjusting any or all of the above.
