Weird. Ask a more frequent Indonesia-visitor. Perhaps something got lost in
translation, but the native guides literally picked up the fallen leftovers
of nutmeg from a nutmeg tree on the jungle floor on our way back from jungle
camp that had obviously been munched on and cast off in typical psittascine
fashion and said, "Kakatua makan," and all four of us white chicks were
completely surprised. There were plenty of other things like that that had
us surprised too, but my notes got tucked away somewhere in my move so I am
not gonna say anything I don't know for sure. But there was definitely some
weird dietary stuff - especially of lories - that I remember them telling us
that blew me away. Maybe I'll send Kev with a list of questions, or maybe
Penguin already knows the answers if she wasn't too busy peeing out of
trees.
I don't know if nutmeg effects birds the same way it effects humans. I don't
even know if it tastes the same to them. I definitely didn't say 'go home
and feed your moluccan cockatoo gallons of fresh nutmeg' and I hope no one
got that from my surprised offhand comment about my confusion over diet. I
feed some pellets though. LOL Even seeds. Black oil sunflower seeds, too.
Isn't that a no-no? I dunno. I think my birds could use the extra fat. Heck,
I was telling Dean the other day I was working on composting my garden and
Sailor was racing me back and forth to a year-old mountain of horse manure
the previous homeowners so kindly left for me. You won't see me recommending
that!
