New & Interested In Free Flight
Hi everyone, I'm Cyndi. I am owned by 3 macaws; one 3 y.o. B&G, one
almost 2 y.o. Greenwing & one 10 y.o. Yellow Collar, and 2 budgies; 6
and 4 y.o. I've been contemplating allowing my GW, Rio, free flight. I
have a harness for him and will be trying to get him used to it. My
B&G is well harness trained, so I have experience. My husband made the
mistake of moving too quickly with it at first with Rio and he freaked
and started clipping his feathers off, so I put it away for a while.
Prior to his last wing clip, he had flight for about a month or so and
seemed to be his most confident and left his feathers alone. He
started clipping them again when we brought him for his wing clip. He
gets stressed very easily. Mind you, he's had the battery of tests
done for any diseases or illnesses and I've carefully observed (very
cautious not to let on that I'm concerned about him doing it) when he
clips his feathers, so I know it's stress related. I'm going through
the old posts now, but there's so much info that I'm getting buried,
ha ha. If anyone has suggestions, please feel free to fire away! Nice
